JUNE 4, 2021 – Geographic Technologies Group (GTG) is proud to support many of the top-performing local government Geographic Information Systems (GIS) across North America. We strive for excellence in geospatial intelligence. Our success is directly tied to the success of our clients.
At the 2021 Indiana GIS Conference (IGIC), our client, The City of Hobart, Indiana, received the award for Excellence in GIS in recognition of their establishment of GIS at the City. With GTG, The City of Hobart fully enabled their teams with location intelligence.
There were 10 key challenges the City of Hobart wanted to address in 2020 and 2021 following the development of a GIS roadmap with GTG in 2019. The City wanted to:
- Effectively Promote the Welfare of its Citizens
- Provide Open and Transparent Government and Public Service
- Empower Stakeholders and Residents with GIS Tools and Information
- Educate Stakeholders and Residents about the Uses and Benefits of Location Intelligence
- Streamline City Operations and Improve Efficiency
- Improve Digital Data Accuracy and Data Reliability
- Promote Economic Growth and Development with Visualization Capabilities
- Quantify the Value and Benefits of GIS Technology
- Introduce Advanced Geospatial Technology 3D Modeling
- Establish Lasting and Sustainable GIS Governance
The City of Hobart effectively addressed these issues and more with GIS and the support of GTG’s team of geospatial experts. A public-facing ArcGIS Hub was implemented to encourage citizens to engage with the City by making GIS accessible and easy to use. This also provided open and transparent government and public services.
City employees were empowered by the one-stop-shop ArcGIS provided with a variety of custom tools for internal teams. ArcGIS Hub streamlines access to GIS by organizing GIS tools and information in a single location. This platform also provides simple GIS access to developers and planners through apps and open data.
Hobart adheres to industry standards when designing its databases, allowing information to be captured and disseminated clearly and effectively. In regard to data, The City of Hobart has adopted data standards such as the LGIM and Esri’s Utility Network model. Hobart invested significant effort into improving the accuracy of GIS assets, reconciling issues in GIS data with other sources.
The multi-year GIS Strategic Plan provided guidance for continued GIS training and opportunities for City employees. The City of Hobart is following the recommendations in its GIS roadmap to ensure sustainable GIS governance and has identified 16 areas that showcase GIS return on investment (ROI). The City’s current project with GTG is modeling City buildings in 3D, a tool that aids future planning with visual renditions that highlight patterns, trends, and non-obvious spatial relationships.
With the continued support of GTG, The City of Hobart is breaking through boundaries in geospatial intelligence applications and utilization.
