JUNE 10, 2021 – PSD Citywide recently announced their rankings for the Top 25 most mature public sector GIS programs in North America for 2020. Four Geographic Technologies Group (GTG) clients received recognition among the rankings, including the City of Irvine, CA (#2), Strathcona County, AB (#6), the City of Mississauga, ON (#10), and the City of Longview, TX (#16).
The 2020 Geospatial Maturity Index (GMI) survey included questions in three main categories: Readiness, Implementation, and Impact. Participants showcased their GIS successes and innovations with an emphasis on improving internal GIS usage and increasing public engagement and awareness. Evaluations included the use of GIS in response to the global pandemic.
PSD identifies the three GIS core competencies as follows:
- Readiness – The capability to establish and sustain a GIS program with funding and staff capacity as well as buy-in from senior management and council.
- Implementation – The availability of tools, processes, and data to support robust GIS programming.
- Impact – The benefits that the GIS program has yielded for both the organization and the public.
The City of Irvine, CA is the first United States GIS program to reach the top three recognized municipalities. We are proud to have worked with the City of Irvine to create their GIS Strategic Plan and provide a LiDAR data evaluation for their Great Park. With the launch of an innovative ArcGIS Hub to improve public awareness, and goals to create advanced 3D maps and collect data in the field using drones, the City of Irvine is at the top of the list for innovation and GIS expertise.
“The City of Irvine GIS team strives for excellence and innovation by integrating into every department of the city and utilizing the newest technologies to tackle modern problems. We focus on enabling every city Department to have an easy way to analyze their data. Whether it’s through using live-data feeds for making critical decisions in real-time or being able to communicate with the public in an emergency situation. We continue to push the boundaries of how GIS is used in local government.”
— Alex Holt, Senior GIS Analyst
GTG continues to work with Strathcona County, AB (#6), the City of Mississauga, ON (#10), and the City of Longview, TX (#16) to implement and improve GIS services and operations. We applaud the effort of all GIS entities across North America as they work to expand awareness and use of geospatial technologies.
